The Paramount - Not Just A Great Place for Breakfast

I have been living in Beacon Hill for the past five years and I have been lucky to frequent most (if not all) of the drinking and eating establishments in the neighborhood. This isn't saying too much because unlike other Boston neighborhoods, Beacon Hill is small in its number of restaurants, although there are a few hidden gems (from the cheap beers at the Sevens, authentic burritos from Villa Mexico to the hidden patio at Hungry I).

Another popular place in the neighborhood is the Paramount, located at 44 Charles Street. This restaurant is known for its breakfast items, which is served cafeteria style. The restaurant is tiny and they strictly adhere to a policy that you are not allowed to save or reserve a table. You can only sit down when you have all of your food with you. It keeps the crowd going, although on any given weekend, the line is out the door.
Although breakfast is served all day into the lunch hour, during law school, I discovered that their lunch menu is also really delicious. My favorites include their Cobb salad and the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. Neither are particularly healthy, but they are delicious to eat when studying for the Bar exam.

Despite my positive breakfast and lunch experiences, I have surprisingly never been to the Paramount for dinner. When it comes to dining out, I tend to favor the restaurants in Cambridge and the South End. Or, if I am meeting a friend after work, I tend to pick one of my Downtown or Financial District stand-bys. So yesterday, when J emailed me about picking a restaurant for our long-standing dinner plans, I was pleasantly surprised when she (and her husband) picked the Paramount as one of their favorite places to eat in Beacon Hill.

We decided to meet there at 6:15 PM and when B and I arrived, they were already seated. It is strange how the whole atmosphere can change with a sit-down service and dimmed lights. While we chatted, I started out with a Wachusett Blueberry beer and we sampled the complimentary foccacia they placed on our table. The foccacia was served with a small side of hummus that was pleasantly flavored with lemon and fresh herbs. It was surprising to be served hummus at the Paramount but it was really delicious.

After a long time of decision-making, W and J started out by splitting a tomato and mozzarella salad, and B and I chose to split their seared ahi tuna roll appetizer. While we were expecting a small appetizer, there was definitely enough tuna to split with the entire table (although neither W and J partook because of their large salad). The tuna was served with a ginger sesame soy sauce, with slices of fresh avocado and homemade crunchy noodles. This was a delicious way to start our meal and the tuna was perfectly seared on the outside. My only complaint is that there was not enough avocado served for the amount of tuna but this turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it forced us to stop eating the tuna in anticipation of our entrees.

Although our entrees took awhile to make it to the table, it gave us time to chat about our lives. J is a close law school friend of mine who I see often for lunch and I absolutely adore her husband W, who is a principal at a local Boston school. Although they have met B before, this was the first time we could all sit down together and hang out. It was great to have everyone get along so well and they may have convinced us to look at their neighborhood for real estate when the timing is right.

But back to the food...

While there was a delicious chicken entree special, I passed when I discovered that it was a bone-in chicken breast because of my aversion to bone-in meat dishes. Instead, at J's recommendation, I had the chicken marsala, which is not a dish that I would typically order at a restaurant because it is something I can easily make at home. However, it was a solid choice. A large chicken breast was cooked to perfection in the marsala sauce and the chicken breast was incredibly tender. The marsala sauce had a generous portion of porcini mushrooms and they were a little salty but probably perfect for the normal diner. The green beans were fresh and cooked in butter. But the real beauty of the dish was the mashed potatoes. Typically any place that serves mashed potatoes falls in the "nothing to write home about" category for me but this was really delicious and the perfect "reminds me of mom" feeling with nothing too extraordinary about them (no potato skins, wasabi, or special herbs).

Everyone else was equally enthralled with their dishes - B with his BBQ steak tips served with a mountain of mashed potatoes, green beans and fried onion rings; W with his chicken sandwich; and J with her chicken piccata. All of the entrees were overly generous and I sadly left a huge portion of the mashed potatoes and green beans behind. Of course this didn't stop me from snagging a few of B's onion rings, which were light and not too greasy.

Although the place was full and there was definitely a few people waiting outside, the service was great. We never felt rushed and if anything, the service may have even been a little on the slow side. We found their offering of milkshakes as desserts to be interesting, but we weren't tempted since we were so full from our dinners. Although their menu isn't necessarily innovative, with reasonable dinner prices and generous portions, it is hard to complain. This is the kind of place that even the pickiest of eaters can find something to eat, and it was definitely family friendly. With their delicious mashed potatoes, I'm sure I'll be back in the winter when I am craving some comfort food.

Weekend Highlights

  • After a phenomenal gym session on Friday after work, there is no better meal to make then homemade tacos - crispy (but not hard shell) tortillas, chicken poached with Pacifico beer and spicy chipotle rub, hot salsa, homemade guacamole (with avocados, cilantro, garlic, red onion, jalapeno, serrano peppers, salt, pepper and lime juice), Mexican shredded cheese, cilantro, and hot peppers. Served with a side of black beans cooked with chili powder, cayenne, and black pepper. Delish.

  • A day swimming and barbecuing in gorgeous weather. There is nothing more relaxing than falling asleep while floating on water.
  • Introducing B's dad to his first ever cookie cake. For a cookie fanatic, this was his dream cake.
  • Making homemade chili in the crock pot (I know, its more of a winter dish but sometimes you have a craving), along with mini cheddar bread bowls. I ofcourse made sure the chili was spicy with jalapenos, serrano peppers, hot sauce, cayenne and red pepper flakes. I also added some leftover yellow onion and bacon from breakfast. There is nothing more delicious than coming home to a meal that's been cooking all day without you being there.

  • Finally catching up on my movies - Labor Pains (don't judge, I proudly love ABC Family Movies), Seven Pounds (intense), and Watchmen (LOVED IT!!!!!!!).
  • Cooling down with homemade pina colada popsicles.
My weekend was perfectly low-key and just what I needed as the next two months are jam-packed with activities every weekend. Hope your weekend was as great as mine...

Pre-Weekend Update

It's been a hectic few days and I'm ready to kick off the weekend (without the rain of course).

After a long afternoon in court on Wednesday, I left work early to get in nine holes at Newton Commonwealth. My friend E picked me up and we met my boss G at the course. I haven't played in over a month due to a busy schedule and the never-ending rain. The last time I was out, I played at E's firm's outing and I played
disastrously. But Wednesday was not so bad and I even managed a bogie at a hole, which I was pretty impressed with (like I said, I haven't played in a month).

It was nice to be out in the sun and play for awhile until it was literally too dark for us to play any longer.

E dropped me off at home and as I was getting out, I unfortunately saw "Chester" parking his car. Man, is he one creepy looking dude. Luckily, I managed to forget his image when I came home to a delicious home-cooked meal. B made panko-crusted baked tilapia with a side of fresh steamed green beans. I think B is obsessed with my vegetable steamer pot and how great fresh veggies can taste on it. Regardless, it was a delicious late dinner after a game of golf and a perfect way to end the day. I'm truly lucky to have a boyfriend who likes to share the cooking responsibilities beyond just taking me out to dinner.

After another busy day at work yesterday, I ran a few errands after work and headed to the Colonial Theater to meet the Lesley girls to see RENT. We discovered that the student tickets released that day were already sold out so we met at Gypsy Bar to have a few cocktails while we formulated a new plan for the evening.

We weren't impressed with the bar (Euro trash anyone?) or the food options so we headed to an oldie but a goodie - Fajitas & Ritas. Over a few pitchers of frozen raspberry margaritas, we debated about who should pay for dates, movie recommendations for a friend who has watched like no movies (it was mind boggling) and Mama T's "upcoming" (okay its in September) birthday party and theme. I absolutely adore the Lesley girls and haven't seen some of them in a really long time, so it was nice to catch up.

On a side note, one of the things that I've realized from my experience with the P.E.R. is that I am not a jealous one with friends. I like having my friends get along with other friends and for the circle to get even bigger.

The rain seems to be slowing down and I'm ready to kick off the weekend. I'm lucky that I can "work from home" when I don't have client meetings or court hearings, so I took my time getting into work this morning after the rain slowed down around 9:30 A.M. It should be a short day for me today, which is good because I'm itching to get out of the office...

Wishing everyone a TGIF!

Ruth's Chris Knows How to Throw a Party

Because my firm is located downtown, I often frequent Ruth's Chris for business lunches or for office parties. As such, I was lucky to be invited to their 4th Annual Summer Nights on the Patio event. It is a fun event where they invite their loyal customers, foodies, members of the media and the usual suspects who make the local party circuit.

The party started at 6:30 PM but I was itching to leave work early, so B and I headed to the Marliave for a drink before the festivities. I've previously blogged about how much I love the Marliave, but I've also heard how slow the business has been there. When B and I walked in a little after 6 PM, the entire downstairs was empty. This surprised me because most of the bars and restaurants in that area are usually busy with the after-work crowd. But as we sat down for a drink (Makers and Ginger for B, a generous glass of Prosecco for me), the place started to fill up. The bar was full and a few of the tables had diners as well. I didn't catch the bartender's name but he was attentive and friendly. Thei
r cocktail list was tempting but a glass of bubbly was what I was craving to unwind from the day. For whatever reason, I am really rooting for this place and am hoping they will survive the bleak restaurant economy.

But I digress...

B and I finished up our drinks and then headed to Ruth's Chris. As the greeters checked off our names on the guest list, we entered the tented area. The tented area was small but it was definitely pleasant. Since the party is meant to be on the patio area, it was an attempt to recreate the atmosphere. They also closed the entire downstairs area for this party, which I thought was a strong commitment to the event considering how many tables they "lose".

I started out with a Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka and tonic, which was strong but delicious. I later switched to several glasses of their "Beacon Hill Iced Tea", which had Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka and iced tea. Delish.

The food was equally delicious and the highlights included their made to order mini steak sandwiches (mine was a perfect medium) with creamy horseradish sauce, rich and buttery crab-stuffed mushrooms, seared ahi tuna served on sliced cucumbers, and their pot stickers (which were deliciously flavored with fresh ginger). Their crab-tinis were also good and the presentation was adorable in mini martini glasses but the slaw accompanying the crab meat left a lot to be desired. The low points were the chicken skewers, which were way too salty, and the potato pancakes, which were cold and greasy. I didn't have any of the sliders, but my companions all loved it.

Speaking of, I was very happy to run into the lovely Rebecca and Laura from Crush Boutique. They were thrilled that I was wearing the new pink top I got this weekend. It was nice to hand out with them, especially since we surprisingly haven't run into each other before out and about in the city.

We left while the party was still going strong because B had work commitments, which was too bad because we had a blast. B loved the food and drink and insists that we go for a meal. Even though I am usually hesitant because I go there often enough for work-related meals, last night's tasty event makes me give it a second thought and I'm sure I'll be back there soon.

A Weekend of Birthday Celebrations

I brag all the time about how awesome my friends are but I can't help it. Whether it be good news or bad, I am lucky to have an amazing group of friends that rely on each other for a support system. But of all the things that we like to do, we love celebrating each other's birthdays. It is one time a year when we have an excuse to show our love for the birthday girl/boy.

This weekend, we started with a birthday celebration at the Green Dragon for the lovely Pahkcah02's 29th birthday. She had asked me to pick a venue where there was a cover band and it would be low key. Ofcourse I took her to one of my favorite bars in Boston. We had a great time dancing, drinking, dancing, drinking...you get the picture. And the band, Velvet Jones, was amazing, especially the female lead singer. I also ran into one of my childhood friend's husband. I actually have never met him before but recognized him from her Facebook pictures. It was totally random but a great night. We ended the night with a little after party at 151, which was a little hazy.

The next day, B and I ventured out to Newbury Street to run some errands. We stopped by Boloco for smoothies to cure us from the festivities the night before. There is nothing like a large Jimmy Carter to hit the spot.

Afterwards, I headed to Cambridge Brewing Company for D's birthday brunch. We had a huge table outside and everyone had a blast chatting. The service was unfortunately abysmal - from taking fifteen to twenty minutes for refills, to serving four people first and then another fifteen minutes for the rest of the ten or so people to get their food, to serving the birthday cake without plates, and general absence of presence. My food was one of the early one served and I got a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw and fried pickles. The pulled pork was way too salty but the coleslaw and fried pickles were delish. Unfortunately my sandwich and accompanying fries came out lukewarm at best and it was just not a great meal. Despite this, we had a good time sitting out in the sun and enjoying the beautiful afternoon.

I had a perfect weekend of birthday celebrations and I finally feel like I've hit my summertime mode. Here are some pictures from this weekend:

Cute group shot. Love the color of my new Dolce Vita dress from Crush Boutique.

A Surprisingly Pleasant Meal at Rabia's Ristorante in the North End

Last night B and I had a birthday party downtown and we decided to head to the North End beforehand for dinner. Despite living so close to the North End, it is a neighborhood I rarely venture into. I get impatient by the crowded sidewalks filled with tourists and always think to the South End or Cambridge for dinner. However, it was a gorgeous (although muggy) summer night and it felt perfect to head into the North End.

Since this was a last minute decision, we weren't sure how successful we'd be without reservations on a gorgeous Saturday night. Our experience has showed that a lot of the smaller restaurants don't take reservations, which result in lots of lines out the door. And the larger places that do take reservations are all booked up without a reservation. Add into the mix the teens and families heading to the Jonas Brothers concert, and it was a madhouse. We strolled around, checked out the menus but were discouraged by the long lines. B hadn't eaten yet all day and decided that we should leave the North End because he was starving. As we started to head towards downtown, we stopped by one more place, Rabia's Ristorante on Salem Street. The place was packed but we managed to get a table right away.

While I understand that the place was really busy, I've got to start out by saying that the service was not great. When we were seated, the host (owner?) gave us our menus and waters were given immediately. While we weren't in a rush, we noticed that about ten minutes later another table was seated next to us. Despite being seated before them, their orders were taken first. It was odd. By the time the server came around to us, we ended up ordering everything - a bottle of wine, an appetizer and our entrees all at once because we weren't sure when he would come back!

Another ten minutes passed by and the server came back with a different bottle of wine than the one we had ordered. He told us that they were out of the wine we had ordered but he let us try a different wine (a slightly sweeter mixed grape bottle). It was a higher price, but they gave us the price of the bottle we had ordered, which I thought was a nice touch.

They gave us a bread basket filled with cold (i.e. not warm) slices of Italian bread. While this is not uncommon at many Italian restaurants, I'm more partial to warm bread. They served a small side of a yummy pesto to spread on top of our bread, which was really delicious.

For our appetizer, we ordered the polpette. It took awhile for our appetizer to come out, but it was a beautiful night and we were happy to drink the wine while we waited. The meatballs were worth the wait. Three perfectly shaped and nicely cooked meatballs arrived in a red sauce with ricotta and sour cream. Although I am not a fan of salty food, I do like my meatball to be a little salty and this was the perfect amount of saltiness. We ate the tender polpette with generous portions of the red sauce, which I was really impressed with.

For our entrees, I ordered a butternut squash and pumpkin ravioli dish. While I tend to lean towards Italian dishes that involve red sauce and seafood, this ravioli dish just called to me. It was served in a Gorgonzola sacue and drizzled with balsamic reduction glaze. The raviolis were a little too al dente for me but the combination of the sauce and balsamic was spot on. My only complaint was that they only served six small raviolis and I definitely wolfed down my dish well before B finished his pollo toscano dish (which he thoroughly enjoyed, especially the artichokes). However, I was full from the wine and appetizers so I didn't mind.

I will say that while the restaurant seemed to turn tables quickly, I never once felt rushed to leave. We lingered to finish the rest of our delicious wine (I wish I had written the name down!) and when B settled the bill, we were amazed at the total charge. We had a bottle of wine, an appetizer, and two entrees all for $79.00. It was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Afterwards, we wanted to satisfy our sweet tooth but wanted to avoid the tourist traps that are Mike's or Modern Pastry. I am partial to Bova's Bakery on Salem Street. B got a chocolate dipped pizzelle cookie and a mini chocolate chip cannoli. I got a chocolate dipped cannoli. We headed to the Rose Kennedy Greenway and enjoyed our delicious treats.

Our impromptu decision to dine there ended up with a great and romantic dinner and I'd highly recommend Rabia's for a great meal at a fantastic price, although not for its service. I say it every time I have a great experience in the North End, but I really need to remember to frequent this neighborhood more often.

There's a Direct Relationship Between Warm Weather and the Amount of Alcoholic Beverages I Consume

It is finally starting to feel like July and the temptation creeps in for me to skip the gym and head to happy hours with my lovely friends. The warmer the weather gets, the more likely you'll find me sipping beers on a patio instead of hitting the treadmill.

This week, I'm already beat and I feel as if the weekend started on Wednesday night when I headed to Tia's for a UMASS alumni event. I am not a huge fan of Tia's. Anytime I am there, it is for a private party or a political fundraiser but typically the general crowd is a meat market of overly tan guys wearing too small Ed Hardy t-shirts. No thanks. But every year, the UMASS Alumni Club throws a big bash there and this year was a lot of fun. There was a mixed crowd and I saw my friend C (an ADPhi that I used to hang out with a ton), A (my friend through KK who also happened to go to UMASS), L (one of my sorority sisters) and D (one of my bestest guy friends). We had a blast and I drank lots of delicious Sam Summers, enjoyed the waterfront view and had a blast.

I felt exhausted the next day but I had to rally for G's surprise birthday party. G is by far one of the best guys I know (and I'm not just saying this because he confessed to me that he reads my blog). Yet I can't remember ever doing anything for his birthday because he is modest and doesn't want a big bash. So, KK promptly ignored him and organized a surprise birthday party for him at Bell in Hand. We got a little area to ourselves and had a great time, especially since I haven't seen most of this gang in awhile! The shots kept going around and then someone mentioned heading to Chinatown. Mama T and I thought we were getting greasy Chinese food but we realized that the guys wanted to go for another reason - Centerfolds. Since I have never been to a strip club, I insisted on joining and a big group went along. It was an interesting scene and S bought me a lap dance so I could have the complete experience. Needless to say, its something I can cross off my bucket list but not necessarily something I want to do again!

Its Friday night and I'm excited for a night of dinner and a movie with my girls. Here are some cute pics from last night:

Happy Birthday George!

Pricey Brunch at Henrietta's Table

After a late night dancing at Club Cafe, B and I were excited to head to brunch at Henrietta's Table. We have both heard a lot of great things about this place and after a night of drinking and dancing, brunch was the perfect way to start a lazy Sunday.

We jumped on the Red Line and headed over to the Charles Hotel. We arrived a few minutes before the brunch began but they seated us immediately. We got a nice shady spot under an umbrella outside on the patio. The brunch buffet was delicious. There are a lot of different options but my favorites included the variety of pate and terrine offerings (especially the duck pate), the generous selection of artisanal cheeses, smoked salmon station, cheesey hominy mashed potatoes, fresh shucked oysters, and the delicious eggs Benedict. There was also a lot I just couldn't eat, including the roast carving station, waffles, and omelet bar.

We ended the meal with lots of fresh berries and thin slices of white raspberry cake and chocolate mousse cake. Now the brunch was $45 a piece and with the pate and oyster offerings, it was well worth it. However, this will definitely be a special occasion type of brunch place. The service was immaculate and we never felt rushed. This was definitely someplace I will recommend to anyone looking for a top of the line brunch.

Afterwards, B and I strolled around Harvard Square. He wanted to test out his still new-ish camera and he got some great artistic shots. I also managed to squeeze in some shopping and got a new tank top at American Apparel that I wore out of the store. We browsed through Concepts, Hootenanny, and picked up a few goodies at Cardullo's Gourmet Shoppe. I got some Penguin biscuits, which I was addicted to when I studied at Oxford.

Below are some photos from the JFK Memorial Park and of B taking photos. As soon as he uploads his photo, I'll share them on here.

B and I ended the day watching Gran Torino. I highly recommend this movie. After our huge brunch, we finally got hungry and just ordered our usual take-out from Billy Tse's. Its a perfect way to end one of the happiest weekends I've had in awhile.

A "Gay" Birthday Bar Crawl Through Back Bay

I consider myself very lucky to have a wide group of friends. On any given night, I am out and about with a mix of people - college friends, sorority sisters, law school classmates, colleagues, and ofcourse the friends of friends of friends. But I unfortunately don't get to hang out with my high school friends (my "Bury rats") as much as I'd like. I have to admit that it is often my fault with a busy social calendar.

But it wasn't always this way. When I first moved to Boston after college, a lot of my college friends did not live in the city. And I spent a lot of time with P and R, two of my nearest and dearest friends from home. We didn't have the financial freedom we have now, but we managed to have a great time - usually with copious amounts of alcohol involved. Now we live in grown-up apartments, have been in and out of serious relationships, and are committed to our careers. But get the whole gang together and nothing changes. This was the case with P's birthday bar crawl.

We started out at Fritz Bar. This bar is adjacent to the Chandler Inn and is a gay sports bar. In honor of my choice drink back in 2003 (vodka lemonade), I had a vodka citron and soda, the closest thing to a vodka lemonade. We mingled and I saw P's "little" brother, who I haven't seen since he was heading into middle school. He is now a college graduate and a grown-up! I felt so incredibly old. Before we knew it, forty-five minutes were up and it was time to head to the next bar.

Our next stop was at Flash's Cocktails. I've actually never been to this bar but I know a lot of people (both good and bad) that frequent this place. The manager (possibly owner?) was incredibly helpful since this was a huge crowd of twenty plus people and gave us our own space. They had some interesting drink options and I opted for a speciality cocktail (which name escapes me) but it tasted like a yummy grape juice-like drink with gummy bears included. Delish. P and I also took a cute photo at Flash's. Also, a big thank you to the owner/manager for helping me out when I lost the back to my earring!

The gang then headed to Cottonwood Cafe's bar and we again took over the whole bar. Our server seemed overwhelmed and the picture below shows why. This was only about half of the birthday bar crawl crowd. But the group was lively and perhaps boisterous, including a lip sync chair dance to Cher. We also managed to snag flowers, which everyone proudly wore (including my heterosexual boyfriend).

Our final stop was at Club Cafe. This brought back a lot of memories because P, R and I used to be here all the time. We spent a lot of time dancing to Spice Girls, Britney and ofcourse Lady Gaga. It was a blast. The rest of the group headed to the Roxy but this was the last place for me. I've officially retired my clubbing shoes a long time ago.
I had a wonderful time with old friends and it reminded me how times and situations may change, but our friendship will always remain constant and true-blue.

Summertime at Crane's Beach

I woke up this morning a little hungover, but ready to soak up the sun. M asked if anyone was interested in going to the beach this weekend and I eagerly jumped on board. A and I were also dabbling with the idea of swimming at her pool so we merged plans. A's sister and brother-in-law decided to join, along with B's friend S.

We headed up to Crane's Beach and had a wonderful day laying out, avoiding seagulls, playing Frisbee in the cold cold water, and enjoying the day. Here are some pics from my first beach day of the season!

Perfectly cropped picture of the girls...

B's artistic foot shot...
Also, a big congratulations to my friend KK for her fantastic 2nd place finish at her triathlon this weekend!

Amazing Views, Delicious Olive Oil, and Perfect Lobster Orzo at Miel

Friday night is usually date night for me and B. But last night, my friend A and I decided to go on a girls' "date" night. We wanted to get all dolled up and enjoy a nice meal outdoors by the water. After several emails, we decided to try out Miel. Located in the Intercontinental Hotel, Miel is a brasserie that focuses on Provencal foods. As the name indicates, there is a strong focus on using honey as one of its ingredients. The restaurant sounded intriguing to us so we were both excited to try it out.

We both arrived at the hotel a little early for our 7:30 PM reservation, so we decided to grab a drink at RumBa. A had arrived first and chose a delicious champagne mojito as her drink and I decided to have the same. The cocktail hit the spot with the perfect combination of champagne and a mojito.

We then headed to Miel and an older hostess was on the phone. She asked us if we had a reservation and then told us another hostess would be seating us. When the younger hostess arrived, we requested outdoor seating. She told us that all the tables were fall and that she was unable to give us any estimate as to when these seats would be open. We found this to be completely bizarre. We must have looked disappointed because the older hostess said that she would see what the situation was. A minute later, she returned and told us that they had an available table that was being cleared and it would just be a few minutes. When she seated us, we had a great table but were puzzled by the several empty tables available.

Despite the strange beginning, we were both in a good mood and excited for the meal ahead of us. Inspired by our champagne mojitos, we decided to continue with more champagne and ordered a bottle of French sparkling wine. We toasted and enjoyed the view. There were a lot of people mingling from their wine terrace and the RumBa patio but it wasn't too loud. It felt like a perfect summer night.

The menu mentioned a complimentary olive oil tasting and our server indulged us. There were two olive oils distinguished by where the olives grew on the tree. One had an unidentifiable but good bite to it and the other tasted more floral (almost lavender-like). The combination of these delicious olive oils and the warm aromatic variety of bread from the bread basket was so comforting. For our entrees, I was torn between their two pasta dishes. I asked the server which one he would recommend, and he said the lobster and orzo pasta. I'm not a huge fan of orzo but anything with lobster is always tempting. Wow. This dish was so creamy and rich. It was orzo sauteed with warm wilted spinach, bright green peas, delicate chantrelle mushrooms and served with in a creamy lobster broth sauce. Despite this amazing creamy combination, the highlight was the generous serving of lobster. The huge claw meat was perfectly cooked. I enjoyed every last bite.

A wanted to get an entree with honey as an ingredient and ordered the lemon honey chicken "a la mentonnaise". It was chicken roasted with an onion marmalade and served with caramelized onions, cherry tomatoes, and some other vegetables. She said it was absolutely delicious. We also split a side of the pomme frites based on the raves on Yelp but to be honest, it was just okay. The fries were cooked well and salted with generous sea salt but nothing to write home about.

I would highly recommend Miel. They have a great seafood selection and the service was really attentive. I enjoyed their patio view and the inside looked really beautiful as well (although different from the rest of the modern decor of the hotel). Their lunch selection, especially their trio of burgers, also seemed really interesting. I am interested as to what their winter menu is like and I'd definitely put this on my list of places to check out again.

Although the desserts were tempting, we decided to save our calories for our cold beverages. We grabbed a cab (I had large heels on) to Atlantic Beer Garden for the opening night of their roof deck. The area was so busy with the Tall Ships but we got into the bar very quickly. We headed to the stairs for the roof deck and were happily told we would be the last ones let up. I think the combination of A's cleavage and my legs didn't hurt! We headed upstairs and it was really nice. One view is gorgeous of the ships and we managed to snag a table fairly quickly. I was also happy that they serve Hoegaarden on draft. My friend KV showed up and then the night started to get interesting when a group of guys joined us. We were the life of the party with a group of guys who wanted us to leave with them for J.J. Foley's (with the owner's son in tow). We thankfully avoided that situation, made a cameo at the Green Dragon and a short stint at the Tap before calling it a night.

I had an awesome "date" night with A and had so much fun when KV showed up. Here are some silly pictures from the night....

A Good Gym Session and a Boyfriend-Cooked Meal

After another stressful (and slightly frustrating) day at work, I was eager to head to the gym to work out my day's frustrations. After some free weights, an hour on the elliptical (I know you say its for wimps KK, but I love it) and crunches, I headed home.

When I walked up the stairs, I smelled delicious things coming from my apartment. My thoughtful boyfriend decided to cook me dinner since he knew how bad my day was. On top of which, he also took some photos since he wanted to play around with the new camera he got for his birthday a few months ago and since he knows that I'd probably post them on my blog. Besides husking some corn, I really didn't do anything to help. And while I maintain that there is nothing than cooking with the one you love, I've got to admit that having the one you love cook for you isn't so bad either....

Making cornbread from scratch in the cast iron skillet....

Boiling corn on the cob....

Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ sauce is my favorite store-bought sauce...add some mustard powder, hot sauce, cayenne or whatever else suits you and you can have a great BBQ sauce...

Baked beans and corn on the stove...

Corn bread out of the oven!

Boneless BBQ chicken, baked beans, corn on the cob and cornbread...

The same for B, except his is with a bone...

No matter how bad your day gets, it ends on a great note when you come home to a delicious meal after a nice long workout. Even though you rarely read my blog, thanks B for the photos!

Its sunny out this morning and it looks like the weekend will be great. It is jam-packed for me with fun stuff so there will be lots of weekend or Monday morning blogs! Have a great weekend!

xoxo
