One of the biggest struggles that any food blogger has is finding time to do it all. Between demanding work hours, food blogger events, cooking in the kitchen and hanging out with family and friends, I'm finding it harder and harder to find time to do it all. Unfortunately, as a result, there is one area of my life that seems to be suffering the most because of it - my health and fitness. I'm finding less and less time to head to the gym, especially since it doesn't open super early or stay open really late. I've been remedying this recently by walking and running in the morning when I know that I won't be able to head to the gym after work. But as the weather gets colder and the mornings grow darker, I know that this is not a permanent option.
I must say that although I am not a "healthy lifestyle" blogger, my health and my fitness are definitely important to me. A few years ago, I was at the gym six days a week and probably at my healthiest. I'm not talking about the number on the scale or the size of my clothing (although both numbers were significantly smaller than they are these days). I just felt like I had more energy and pep on a daily basis.
Of course, I have been venting my frustrations to Bret about this for some time and after many discussions, we decided to do something to really change the situation.
We ordered an upright exercise bike! While our place is decent-sized, there was no way that we could fit a treadmill or an eliptical machine...so we decided to order this bike instead. My plan is to get at least 45 minutes of cardio in the morning on the days when I know I won't have time to go to the gym after work. It was a bit of an investment, but there really is no price on your health. I went to the gym today but I'm excited to jump on it tomorrow morning to give it a spin!
Do any of you share the frustration of not having time to work out? How do you manage to make fitness a priority when your schedule gets busy?

I love this! I've been struggling with the same thing. I think a treadmill might be in our future for the house!
Congratulations on the investment. I always tell my friends that spending so much money on the gym and yoga classes is okay because I'm basically investing in myself. I also sometimes find myself too busy, so I schedule my longer cardio sessions on the weekends. Also, interval training is a good time-saver - you work out for less time, but at a higher intensity. And last but not least, I'm trying not to be too hard on myself if I miss a workout :)
I attest to all of this! However I wish I was working regularly, then I might not have so much free time to go, but am glad I am...I also prefer a bike over a tread mill, but hubby had first pick!
I completely agree! With life being so busy the first thing to go for me is working out! And in reality I feel it should be the last! I can relate to the dark mornings! :( Hope you are enjoying the bike and your weekend!
I think that's a great investment. I wake up super early to workout because there's no way I can drag myself to the gym after a long day at work.
Congrats, Michelle! I completely agree, I'm not a healthy lifestyle blogger either, and I really don't eat healthy most of the time, but I do think it's important to stay active whenever you can. I've always hated the inconvenience of having to go to the gym after a long day, or waking up earlier than usual to go out of my way to exercise, but having a way to get some good cardio in your home is a great idea!! I'm sure it was worth the investment :)
I find that exercise dvd's are the only way I actually get exercise in every day. Maybe because for me I need variety so I have a few I alternate between (and I am currently using my netflix to find new videos that I'd consider buying!)
this is awesome! what a great splurge. Man, I'd love one of these in my place even though I don't have a lovely little corner like yours where it would fit.
Yes! I have a gym membership, but I LOVE my stationary bike at home. I save all sorts of awful TV shows, then hop on the bike and get to have some great zone out time. My bike has really helped my marathon training when the weather is awful too. I look forward to that time with the TV or a magazine, so I want to do it!
umm i work at a gym 12 hours a week and still have a hard time finding time to workout! life just gets in the way sometimes. im totally lacking energy lately and know i reallyyy have to get some cardio in to remedy the situation! love that you bought a bike for your place.. that will definitely be a time saver and now you wont have to trek to the gym when the snow falls ;) [chels]
Good for you for getting a bike to do cardio at home! That's quite the dedication. I've been trying to get back on track with my working out... It's not going so well right now :(
having a set workout schedule and sticking to it. sucking it up on a dark, cold, rainy/snowy evening and getting the workout done no matter what. way to go m and b!
Great and truthful post - it can be difficult! I just finished a running program for a 5K that I want to run, and I did it by making it part of my schedule. I treat it just like an appointment or event. Sounds like you and B have a good plan ahead of you!
That is an awesome idea! I never find time to work out anymore. I thought after I left Flour, I'd have more time for the gym but that time just got filled up with other things. And like you I felt much better (had more energy, less tress, etc.) when I was working out regularly... but it's bene about 4 years since I was in that mode. We walk a lot, which I guess is a start.
Having equipment right at home is SO convenient - good for you! I used to be really good about doing INTENSE workouts a few years back - I trained for a half, etc. But I still had a hard time keeping up when I got busy with work...Yoga has been really good for me because I do it in the a.m. and its done. I can't do anything too intense in the morning.
Wow, that's so awesome. I really want a full gym at my house one day!
I like your article and it really gives an outstanding idea that is very helpful for all the people on web.
Thanks for sharing your post and it was superb .I would like to hear more from you in future too.
