We arrived in time for our 7 PM reservations but were asked to wait while a table became available. While I understand that Mela is a small restaurant with limited seating, I was a little frustrated waiting twenty minutes for a table. I mean, what is the point in making a reservation? There were a few other groups of diners in the same predicament who seemed equally annoyed.
But, by the time we did sit down, Bret and I were ready to put our annoyances aside. It definitely helped that we received an amuse bouche of a fried spicy cauliflower.
We indulged in more carbs with the garlic naan. This was a good choice because we found relief from the spicy lamb coconut curry from the garlic naan and I couldn't get enough of the naan!
Bret and I really enjoyed our date night at Mela. The food was all incredibly delicious but the service was a bit hit or miss. We waited quite a bit for our table despite having reservations, it took awhile to get the attention of our servers throughout the evening and our dishes were sloppily presented (as can be seen in the photos above). In addition, Mela also offers hot stone cooking at the table but doesn't have appropriate ventilation for it. As a result, when a neighboring table ordered their hot stone cooking, our clothes ended up reeking of smoke at the end of the night. We noticed that Mela's take-out business seemed really busy and perhaps ordering from their delivery service will be a better option for us.
Mela is located at 578 Tremont Street, Boston, MA.

I sampled a few of mela's popular dishes at Taste of the South End and loved everything. It's disappointing that their service wasn't quite up to par though. At least the food was good!
That garlic naan looks fabulous. I have tried Mela at so many tasting events, but I've never actually been to the restaurant. I absolutely love Indian food. What a nice date night!
This is a great, honest review. the food looks fantastic, but I too get really annoyed when I have to wait a long time when I already made a reservation.
Too funny, I just sent some guests to Mela last night. I had never heard of it before. And I love Indian food! Especially the butter chicken and the naan. :-)
Mmm, naan :) Glad the dishes were tasty, but i'd be disappointed waiting and leaving smelling of smoke...
Hmm... it sounds like the service was disappointing, but at least the food was tasty. I'd order some takeout naan!
Wow, the food looks delicious! The garlic naan looks sooo good...I could seriously go for some right about now!
I look forward to *hopefully* seeing that recipe! I admit, I've been meaning to go to Mela for some time now. Seems like a new restaurant always comes up to distract me ... (I realize this is a good problem to have.)
Wow - I definitely want to try Mela now. Especially since they actually made the dishes really spicy. I always ask and it never happens. Sounds like it was a lovely date night!
Sorry about the service. The food sounds delish though!
I never happened upon exceptional Indian food while in Boston, I must have missed this place. I did find an excellent Ethiopian place though, Addis Red Sea up on Tremont. Deeeelish!
The food looks fantastic. I'm definitely having some serious Indian cravings right now!!
