Giving Back: Boomerangs

As Bret and I prepare for our big move, we are doing a lot of purging.  I'm seriously embarassed by the amount of random things (especially papers, linens, electrical cords) that we have managed to accumulate in Beacon Hill.  Over the Fourth of July weekend, we finally started to get organized and shredded two whole garbage bags worth of personal documents.  Insane, right?

We've also managed to accumulate a lot of books, shoes, purses (for me), and clothing.  I reached out to my Twitter followers and Facebook friends about a good place to donate these items.  We got a lot of great recommendations and after some research, we finally settled upon Boomerangs.

Boomerangs is a resale consignment store where the proceeds go toward funding the Aids Action Committee of Massachusetts.  I actually used to volunteer for the Aids Action Committee when I was in high school, so I was thrilled to donate to such a great cause.

Boomerangs has four great locations in Boston and Cambridge, but the Special Edition store in the South End is the closest location for us.  Over the Fourth of July weekend, we felt really great about donating six huge bags of clothing, purses and shoes.  We thought we were done purging but over this past weekend, we dropped off more bags of coats, scarves and books.  I felt especially good about our donations when I even spied a pair of my old shoes in the window!  I wore these shoes once to match a bridesmaid dress and I'm hoping that someone else will put them to good use for a good cause!

As we continue to clean and pack, I suspect we'll be making at least one more visit to Boomerangs as we continue to discover more gently used items to donate!

Tell me, what are some of your favorite places to donate gently used items?

We have donated some things to Boomerangs. We also make trips to the Goodwill near us about 4 times a year after big cleaning sprees. It feels good to do all of that cleaning and know that someone else will benefit.

I donate stuff to Goodwill, but will check out Boomerang soon. Good job with all the cleaning/packing, and good luck with the upcoming move!

What a great idea! We all have tons of needless junk - I usually donate to Goodwill but it's nice to know there are other options out there.

I recently purged my closted - some of the nicer stuff went to be thrifted at Second Time Around but the rest is sitting in trash bags looking to be donated. Do they take all kinds of clothes?

I've never heard of Boomerangs. Definitely going to check it out. I bet their South End location has some pretty fab stuff!

Kristen, they definitely take all kinds of clothing! We donated lots of suits, coats and casual clothing!

It's great to hear about a place like this. We donated a bunch of stuff when I moved in with Jeff. It wasn't the best experience and I would love to donate somewhere where it looks like my stuff really is going to a good cause. Boomerangs sounds like that place.

I love that! I usually just go with Salvation Army with my things. Good luck with your move, I can't wait to welcome you to north country! :)

I live in JP and go to Boomerangs there all the time. You never know what you might find! We've donateda bunch of stuff to Boomerangs, and also to Goodwill (which also has a store in JP!).

Isn't that such a great feeling?? Dropping all those bags off always makes me feel like I have a fresh start! Good luck with your packing/move!

I love Boomies. I found an old Philco radio there for $15 that I was able to fully restore - ever since I've encouraged my friends to donate as much and as often as possible. Amazing what people with throw out without a gentle reminder of places like Goodwill and Boomies.

Got to love the name of that store. As an Aussie I definitely appreciate the meaning behind it. All the best with the move.

I probably donate clothing once or twice a year to just TRY to clean out my closet a bit to make room for new things (a girl has to shop, right?). Good luck with your move!!

Great post. We have a place called Quigley house - they are a shelter for battered women & children. We donate there. They not only use the itms for their house, but sell items to offset their costs.

One other thing we've done - when our neighborhood has their annual picnic, all the unopened items (hotdogs, buns, etc) can be donated for their kitchens. It's a great cause!

This is such a great tip-- I seriously need to purge my closet and dressers and can think of few better causes to support than the AIDS Action Committee. What a win-win!
