The Great Lobster Adventure

During my quick visit with Alicia, we had a mission to knock an item off of my 30 by 30 list - boiling a lobster!

Of course, we procrastinated a little bit by catching up over some vino, indulging at Max's Oyster Bar, and playing with Roscoe, Alicia's adorable puppy...

Seriously, how can you resist this fluff-ball?

...but finally we got to work!  We started out by purchasing two fresh lobsters from Tinker's Seafood that weighed about a pound and a half each.

We worked up our courage with some glasses of rose and then decided to face the lobsters while the water was boiling.  One of the lobsters was a bit mellow...and the other was a bit mean.  This didn't stop us from goofing around with them during the last minutes before the big boil.

I look frightening in this picture.  I'm also mostly frightened of this lobster.

Roscoe wasn't quite sure what to make of the lobsters...

As a side note, can you tell that we drank a bit of wine?  Ha!

When the water was finally boiling, we got to work.  Since I'm supposed to boil the lobster by myself, I agreed to be the one to put the lobster in the pot while Alicia quickly put a lid on it.  Since we didn't have a stockpot large enough for both lobsters, we cooked them one at a time.  It was honestly less traumatic than we thought, especially since neither of the lobsters struggled or shrieked.

Alicia did a lot of research and we boiled them for about five minutes per pound, or about seven minutes each.  When each lobster was done, we gave it a cold water bath to help stop the cooking.

The end result?  We had the most delicious and messy summer lobster boil that consisted of lobster, red bliss potato and corn with melted butter and Sriracha butter.  Delicious.

I am so glad that Alicia and I decided to conquer the lobster together and I definitely am looking forward to knocking more items off the list with friends because it makes it so much more fun!

Tell me, do you eat boiled lobster?  Have you boiled a lobster yourself?

Yay! You did it! Though I am vegetarian, I have indeed boiled a lobster. It was sort of traumatic and awesome at the same time. Love the apron!

We used to boil lobsters every summer - it was a frightening sound, but a delicious meal!

My hats off to you, both! Bravo! I can't do it...I'm too scared that the lobster is somehow going to jump up back at me and eat up my face! :)

I've never done one myself, but plain boiled lobster with butter is my favorite way to eat lobster! Great job!!!

I'm not sure what wine you drank... but next time, you have to pick up a bottle of champagne to go with your lobster. It is a marvelous pairing.

Before you're allowed to live in Maine, they test you on your lobster knowledge. ;) I eat it about once a year and, funny enough, I almost never eat it in Maine(though I live here). And I'm glad that I'm not the only one that lets the pets check out dinner before it's boiling plunge.

Yay!! You guys did a great job! I know a lot of people are nervous about killing lobsters. The idea of boiling them doesn't bother me so much. In culinary school I had to kill lobsters by slicing through their brains with a French knife (to later cut into pieces). Talk about traumatizing, especially when their tail starts flapping around, eek. Let's just say, I failed at killing mine because later when I went to cut it into pieces it jumped off the counter, lol. Oh, and then when we went to cut it apart, the parts were still moving even though it was dead. NEVER DO THAT! You succeeded WAY better than I did, lol.

Congratulations for knocking something else off your list! I LOVE the pics....

I've never boiled a lobster - I'm allergic, but I would if I could!

This reminds me of my first lobster boiling experience! I was home, alone - with my two dogs. I was trying to photograph the whole thing and the second I'd get the lobster close to the pot, it would just start moving frantically - which made me freak out and call my fiance every 5 minutes. It even scared the dogs a little that I ended up having to catch a falling studio light (because one of the dogs hit it after running away) in one hand, while still holding the lobster in the other. But it all worked out in the end - we had delicious lobster, eventually =)

Lobster is definitely one of those food items where after a few bites, I'm done with it. I think it's the texture of the meat. I like a really sweet lobster though.

Congrats on checking off another thing on your list!

Nice work, I'm so impressed! I actually have a huge lobster pot but haven't used it yet to cook lobster(Apolinaras uses it to brew beer and I used it to brine our turkey at Thanksgiving) - must put this on my list!
