Home Sweet Home - Amherst, MA

There are few places that I love more than Amherst, Massachusetts.  I spent four wonderful years at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.  In addition to getting a wonderful education at UMass,  my time in Amherst was the first time I really lived away from home and the place where I really became an adult.  During my years in Amherst, I met some of my best friends, fell in love, had my heart broken, became a vegetarian, stopped being a vegetarian, wrote my senior thesis, learned to handle my personal finances, participated in political protests, felt the world stop on 9/11, decided to go to law school...the list goes on and on.

Whenever I drive out to Amherst, I can't help but smile as I pass through the rolling hills and start spotting familiar sights.  Almost a decade has passed since I graduated but it always feels just like yesterday and it always feels like I'm coming home.  This is the reason why I have volunteered as a UMass alumna since my graduation, and this is the reason why I continue to give a lot of my time and energy to this wonderful community.

This past Saturday, I had to drive out for a Board of Directors meeting on campus.  Bret and I drove out together and he explored Amherst while I was in my meeting.  Afterwards, I showed him some of my favorite spots on campus and around town - including Bueno y Sano

While so much of the campus has changed, I was surprised at how much I still remembered of the campus.

Returning to Amherst always feels like coming home.  Where is your home away from home?

Parts of UConn look similar to that. The Cape is kind of my home away from home.

I went to UMASS Dartmouth and went back recently to a visit a friend that is a research assistant there. So much has changed! It was fun to go back and relive some memories.

I have a close friend who feels the exact same way about UMass Amherst...she loves taking me out there to show me around and it is beautiful!

My home away from home will always be London. I spent a semester there and have gone back to visit multiple times...now trying to get into grad school there. It just keeps calling my name!

NH feels like this to me... though I grew up there, so I guess it's sort of my real home too. Amherst looks lovely!

Amherst IS my home!--well, nearly. I grew up across the river, in a tiny town next to Northampton.

Boston is my home-away-from-home, since I spent MY school years there :) Whenever I see that skyline coming up on the horizon I just can't help but smile!

I haven't gone too far from my home away from home, but it always feels different to go back. Things change so quickly...

Loved reading this post, as I actually did grow up in Amherst! It's a wonderful place, so warm and happy and always welcoming. And there's great food! My home away from home (and now real home) is definitely Boston.

That's where my husband went! I loved going back to Endicott College; it's a beautiful location on the ocean. :-)

Oh UMass... and Bueno y sano. Until then I thought all Mexican food was greasy and full of onions. Thank god they changed my mind! :)
I feel really nostalgic when I'm back there as well. I think NYC always feels like home too!
